Pipe-wrench jaw teeth are hardened and serrated to bite into the softer metals of round pipes and provide grip.We use another type of wrench called a plumber wrench on pipes, and in some places, it is also called a pipe wrench.

Monkey Wrench vs. Pipe Wrench

The main difference between a monkey wrench and a pipe wrench is the shape of their jaws. Monkey wrenches have flat jaws, while pipe wrenches have serrated, or toothed, jaws. Additionally, on a pipe wrench, the upper jaw moves when you turn the adjusting knob, whereas, on a monkey wrench, it’s the lower jaw that moves.

Further, most monkey wrenches come with wood-covered handles, whereas pipe wrenches usually just have forged metal one-piece handlebars. A monkey wrench is better suited for general-purpose tasks such as mechanics or carpentry because its flat jaws can grip onto square or hex-shaped nuts easily. On the other hand, a pipe wrench is designed specifically for turning or tightening pipes since its serrated jaws can grip round surfaces well without damaging them.

When it comes to popularity, the monkey wrenches are no longer as widely used as they once were, while pipe wrenches continue to be one of the essential tools in a plumber or mechanic’s toolbox.
